The Malta National Museum of Natural History is located in the old capital, Mdina, within the eighteenth century Magisterial Palace of Justice. It is housed within Vilhena Palace which was restructured in 1726 by a Grand Master and it became a temporary hospital during the 1837 Cholera outbreak, a sanatorium for British troops in 1860, and later a tuberculosis hospital. The museum was officially opened in 1973. The museum is a national repository of biological specimens mainly relating to Malta.

Malta’s brand new visual arts institution and legacy project for Valletta 2018 European Capital of Culture title. In 2018, the project has been flagged by the Guardian as one of 13 must see new European museums and by Architecture Digest as one of 15 noteworthy brand new worldwide museums which opened in 2018. Key works include those by Southern Italian artist Mattia Preti, British 20th century artist Victor Pasmore and Malta’s own top 20th century sculptor Antonio Sciortino.

The Malta Maritime Museum is set within the Old Naval bakery on the Birgu (Vittoriosa) waterfront. Within it, artefacts and exhibits take you on a 7,000 year journey through Malta’s maritime history, showing how this history and the ties with the Mediterranean sea influenced Maltese people and the island in general.
